While other information sources are dependent on editors’ relationships with industry contacts, the PMM is not.  Fourteen years ago, we set up a benchmarking study to gather key information from subscribing converters so that we would have the most accurate information to analyze the market.  Participants are provided with data forms at the end of each month to supply:  deliveries, prices paid, expectations for the next 3 months, end-of-month inventory, resin usage for the month, and finished-goods inventories.

Data from hundreds of resin-converter participants is not our only source of information.  We also survey resin suppliers to collect their input on both the resin they sell and feedstocks they use.  With a robust set of data from resin suppliers and converters, the PMM is able to verify all data that is included in its monthly study.

No one else in the industry has access to such specific information and gathers it in a systematic way each month. Participants have a vested interest in supplying accurate information because they pay for the PMM report.  They want to know where they stand in relation to the market, so they may maintain their position or negotiate further.  Resin suppliers subscribe to the PMM because they know the information reflects actual market activity and is quite different from other publications that follow supplier price announcements and survey very few resin purchasers.
